Ways to Increase Self-Care
Ways to Increase Self-Care
The term self-care gets thrown around a lot on social media lately. “Bought a purse because self-care!” “Bought a new wardrobe because self-care!” Yes, it can feel good to purchase things for ourselves, but self-care is much more than that and doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot of money. Self-care is about listening to ourselves and find out what we truly need. Self-care is about recognizing we have a need and treating ourselves with kindness, compassion, and respect.
How can I improve self-care when I am experiencing anxiety?
Make time for yourself. Sometimes this mean saying “no” to something to say “yes” to you. It is ok to say “no” to things if they will take away from your emotional well-being.
Reconnect with a hobby that you have set aside. Maybe this means picking up a book, drawing, making something, or playing a video game. If you are strapped for time, even 10 minutes of an activity can help.
Get moving. Go for a walk. Work out Take an exercise class. Go hiking. Again, if a busy schedule is a barrier, a few minutes of walking can be beneficial.
Socialize. Spend time or have a phone call with your favorite supportive people. Reach out to people who add to your emotional well-being rather than take away from.
Create a healthy sleep routine. Try doing the same thing every night before bed whether it is taking a bath (another self-care idea!), reading, checking social media, etc. Then, try to go to bed at the same time most nights. Taking steps to improve your sleep can have huge payoffs in your mood. Click here for more information on reducing anxiety before bed.
